At Les Quennevais Food is taught as part of Design and Technology. In Key Stage 3 students study for one hour per week and can choose to study it to GCSE level in Key Stage 4.
Practical work is central to this subject and the department aims to provide all students with the basic skills to prepare and cook a wide range of products and dishes. We have two fully equipped food rooms. Topics covered include Healthy eating, local produce, the functions of ingredients, health and well being and food safety and hygiene. In the summer term each year group follows the Active Kids Get Cooking and are entered for this nationally recognized award. Each year students have the opportunity to enter the "Skills for Life" competition held across all island secondary schools. This involves working with local celebrity chefs and is a fantastic way to develop both skills and confidence. In Year 8 we hold our own house competition "Ready Steady Cook" and invite guests in to judge the results. We are an enthusiastic and forward thinking department and contribute a great deal to the wider school life of Les Quennevais.
