The English Department believe that all students are entitled to a challenging, academic and enjoyable experience of English. Our aim is to empower students by enhancing their language skills while developing a lifelong passion for language and literature in the process.

Our Key Stage 3 curriculum has been constructed to automatically build on the knowledge and skills gained at primary school. It offers a grammar and vocabulary rich experience of English that prepares students for the challenges of the GCSEs and beyond. A wide variety of fictional and non-fiction genres including mythic tales, detective fiction, gothic horror and persuasive rhetoric are studied. Writing plays a central part in English. All students complete a weekly extended composition piece in order to build their confidence and resilience. Students’ English subject knowledge is also supported with half-termly literacy homework booklets, library sessions and regular author visits and enrichment opportunities.
