Les Quennevais School Intent Statement
“Our curriculum is curated to provide a coherent, intentional learning experience, equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and compassion to navigate and shape a changing world.”
Our Curriculum
A curriculum is never static; it continually evolves, shaped by new ideas, experiences, and challenges. It is influenced by many factors — government policy, school ethos, professional development and specialist subject expertise. Yet, at its heart, it is our heads of department and teachers who bring the curriculum to life. They steer its direction, using their knowledge and experience to chart the best course for our students’ learning journey.
Our curriculum builds on the foundations established at Key Stage 2, providing a strong platform for students to continue their studies beyond Year 11. But its purpose extends far beyond academic progression. The curriculum tells a powerful story — one through which we pass on essential knowledge and skills that enable our students to find their place in the world. It connects them with the ideas, conversations, and discoveries of those who came before us, helping them to understand how these have shaped our lives and the society we share today.
At the same time, our curriculum aims to inspire passion and curiosity. It equips students with lifelong skills and knowledge while also supporting them to achieve the qualifications they need to pursue further education and their personal goals.
Learning begins the moment our students walk through the door each morning. The expectations they encounter and the conversations they take part in help define the values that underpin our curriculum - what we believe is worth knowing and doing well. We recognise that a curriculum cannot reach its full potential without strong pastoral care and a deep understanding of every child in our community.
At Les Quennevais, the curriculum is a constant focus of professional discussion. Each week, staff are given dedicated collaborative planning time to reflect, share ideas, and refine their practice. This allows teachers to strengthen their subject knowledge, develop effective strategies for explanation, modelling, and scaffolding, and ensure that independent learning is both purposeful and successful.
the three C’s of our curriculum:
compassionate
Through the stories we weave into our curriculum, we cultivate a sense of compassion—an essential value for our interconnected world. By exploring the lives of remarkable individuals and pivotal moments in history, students come to understand the transformative power of empathy. Compassion shapes societies, protects our planet, and profoundly impacts the lives of others. The curriculum must support our students to contribute to a more just, caring, and sustainable future.
Curious
We ignite curiosity by engaging students through a challenging curriculum. Through the unfolding of great stories and ideas, we craft a compelling narrative that builds over time, drawing students deeper into the heart of each subject. With every lesson, uncovering new layers of knowledge, fuelling their desire to explore further. Our role is to inspire our students to ask questions, seek answers, and develop a lifelong passion for learning.
coherent
We believe in the power of a coherent curriculum. One that develops knowledge purposefully and progressively across subjects and over time. By thoughtfully sequencing learning, we ensure every new concept builds on and strengthens previous understanding. This approach enables students to express their ideas with confidence and fluency through reading, writing, and speaking, cultivating articulate, connected thinkers who are fully prepared for their next steps in the world.
